I also like Dumpy especially when i think i've done my loot then just before the line he calls my horse the winner !
Plus he seems passionate whilst commentating and he is unique !


Sheldon in kzn is a very good caller but he gets on my tits when he overdoes it . it's like as if he is boasting that he labeled the winner , it's just tooooo much at times !

His father is one of my favorites . He has been so very accurate since i can remember him and he just calls it as it really is . He is the only commentator that announces the race time after his call . He is not known as "eagle eye" for nothing ! He struggled a bit yesterday . He seemed to loose his breath hope he gets back on track !

unfortunately the quality of commentators in this country has declined like the rest of the industry ...the likes of ernie and peter duffield trevor and eric denman graeme hawkins have been replaced by largely young knowitalls after race merchants...its a great pity because the commentator is a hugely important job in that he has the hopes of punters owners andtrainersall wrapped up in his call of the race and the old commentators certainly knew how to paint a picture when races were not televised and you listened on the radio

That's exactly the point.
Technology has changed.
So should the commentators.
Everyone (95% at least) watches the broadcast - it's the commentator's job to enhance what the viewer already sees (and often the viewer sees things the commentator misses!).

The Mauritius commentating by Shaheen is a good example of how it can be done.

There isn't a single SA commentator who does that routinely.
They should dump their binoculars and call from the screen.
It'll make things a whole lot better to follow (and will put pressure on giving us better camera-work, too).

(my biggest irritation is in largish fields, when the commentator takes ages to go through the whole field, and has no idea what's happening upfront).

Yeah, I agree with the pirate, hopefully Turfontein will sort out the commentary box, so as to not hear the noise from the box next door or the wind blow into the "mic", pretty poor quality at times.

But if Craig Peters had called off the TV yesterday he never would have seen Ridethebreeze send his jockey into the rail. I agree that in an ideal world calling off the monitor is the way to go, but we seriously need much better coverage first.
