Punter for me it is a case of looking for value. There might only be one horse in two or three meetings that you find, have a good punt and hope for the best. Don't force it, if you don't find anything worth backing on a card leave it until you find the right horse. Bet with restraint, which is difficult I know, but it is the only way to consistantly show a profit. If you want to bet for the sake of betting on a particular day play a small PA for interest but don't get too involved.

Punter, I would say on my system of backing a maximum of 1 runner a day I would be winning. If I spend the day at the race or it is July day then I play more for fun and bet smaller in several races, but picking out one bet a day makes me a profit over time.

It depends on the definition of a 'serious' punter; to me a 'serious' punter is one who makes his living out of this game; therefore I am not a 'serious' punter, but would think that 'serious punters' need to have discipline, patience and a staking plan that works for them - I don't think the type of bet comes into it - but probably the KISS principle applies - select a horse (and volumes have been written on selection methods) and back it - whether for a win or each way or place. STICK TO YOUR STAKING PLAN - do not get emotional - anyway that's my take on being a 'serious' punter - it can be as boring as your day job.

Ideally I think one should strive to include a second element into your punting; if you are a 'serious' punter, nothing prevents you from also having some entertainment/fun on the side; you would use the money earmed from the 'serious' punting side to pay for this entertainment/fun; try and catch that elusive P6 with a small budget, or the PA 100 times, or that juicy quartet - but do not let the 'fun' part interfere with the 'serious' part.

PUNTER - I could not have put it better.
Remember DISCIPLINE .

One important piece that I want to add to the above . Don't listen to any Tom , Dick , and Harry . ........especially phrases such as, I heard about this horse from my uncle's sister-in-law whose brother supplies feed to certain stable. If you are not connected, don't bother.

Study form and form alone 95% of the time.
If you don't have the time, MAGIC has done all the work for us punters (buy his race card). I also try to include a few of my own fancies in his perms. If Matthew has a lunatic selection in his perm, don't substitute rather add. I have done that a few times and regretted it.

Here's wishing you profitable punting in the years ahead.

That important piece"don't listen to........" is very important!
A very sobering thought is the widely accepted ratio that no more than 5% of punters show a profit,in the long run.
That means that when you are offered advice/tips etc.there is a 95% chance they are coming from a loser!
The low figure of 5% suggests that the winners aren't sharing their secrets.
Unless you are lucky enough to know a PROVEN winner, who is prepared to show you the 'secret' you will have to work it/them out for yourself, but I can tell you that EVERY winning punter has a staking plan that is key to his success.Every pro-punter including sports bettors, poker players etc. preach that.
The reason I say proven is that ,having raced for 40yrs,I can't tell you how many punters claim to be winning bombs, but keep running out of money???????
If you read the forums closely, there have been a number of posters that qualify.
Its your money....if you win ,thats great and if you lose ,at least lose your money your way!

PUNTING METHODS….interesting !!!

Profitability measurement on a daily basis is not practical…the peaks and troughs of punting follow the same cycles of life, and are, more meaningful over an extended period, possibly a year. Few are able to ‘grind out’ a positive return (consistency is rare), a couple of ‘good hits’ during the course of a season, or year, are more likely to lead to finishing on a plus.

1. My favourite venue is Vaal Sand.
I enjoy producing speed ratings…they appear to work better on sand than turf for all classes.
The draw is significant and analysis of this is often rewarding.
My betting records show it is my most successful venue.
Most of my readings, and some research, are from American based horseplaying.
Above all I have faith that it shall be profitable for me…and this is not purely fiscal.

2. Never, although my partner and I often play a combined pick 6, however our relationship is not
affected by the outcome, which may not be the case with a ‘betting buddy’.

3. I play quartets mostly (as again from my betting records) they are the most ‘profitable’ for me.
I have an opinion about every horse in the race. I enjoy the ‘thrill factor’ with quartets and am able to balance it with the ‘regret factor’.

4. 70% of my energy, 50% of my time and a few Rands.

5. Yes, it is however, and inevitably, dynamic.

Systems do not work yet a systematic approach is essential.

WHAT you SELECT is NOT as important as…
HOW you BET, which in turn is NOT as important as…
WHY YOU BET.

PUNTING FOR PROFIT OR PLEASURE ?????

Honesty with oneself is a big issue !
