East, Dean Russell was never a trainer, that was his brother who trained,

John Nicholson did ride over sticks in England, but I think as an amateur. Bartie Leisher never trained, and I don't think Charlie Barends did either, though I think he was an assistant to his son-in-law Aubrey Roberts, who was a jockey-turned-trainer himself. Bennie Little didn't train, either, but the rest of Countrymember's list were all jockeys who turned to training.

I see you've included amateur jockeys - it must be Mike Bass then, who rode his own horses as an amatuer I think.

I don't think that Brian Passmore has ever held a trainer's licence. Nor for that matter has Garth Puller. Speaking of amateur riders, one who had a bit of success as a trainer was Terrance Millard.....>:D< I think his brother-in-law Ralph Rixon may also have ridden as an amateur, I;m not sure. I know that Dean Kannemeyer and Greg Ennion did, I spent an evening after one of the sales being regaled by them both about their days in Cape Hunt racing. It was hilarious.

Armando Freddi comes to mind as a jockey who turned to training, and then went back to being as jockey again. The late Arthur Miller shuffled between riding and training a couple of times. I think Willie Uys briefly trained before he went back to riding, not to be confused with when his wife Marcelle started training a bit later on. I'm sure I will think of others who have been both jockeys and trainers. Oh yes, Nick van Tonder was another.

Charlie Roberts.

Didn't Justin Snaith also ride in a few amateur races?

nice feedback from all the clan, but LUCKY, after yesterdays win in Dubai plus your Gr1 win in Hong Kong, and Gr1 wins in S.A. with JJ, YOU have to be the MOST FAMOUS S.A. TRAINER WHO WAS A JOCK IN MY EYES.

Lucky, hope you've come back to earth after this historic week-end.

It was a priveledge to be in the ABC box with Scotia, John, Zoro & other clan members when JJ won & of course NATALIE WAS THERE & TRACEY. What a vibe there was in the box............ we ALL SHOUTED J.J. HOME, he just got there by a whisker........... but the # is in the frame.

congrats to all.

I think all the posters have missed one highly accomplished ex-jockey : Peter Kannemeyer.

To the best of my memory he saddled at least 2x Met winners and 1x July to say nothing of a number of Guineas winners and a raft of other Grade 1 achievements. He was also one of the few to successfully raid the then Transvaal from the Cape and win a Grade 1 ( ? ) with Over The Air.

Ormond Ferraris was also a jockey, once upon a time.
