Bold Silvano warming up well for Durban July

South Africa: Bold Silvano, 6-1 third favourite for Saturday week's Vodacom Durban July, impressed when ridden by big-race jockey Anthony Delpech in a public gallop at Greyville on Thursday morning.

The Mike de Kock-trained colt worked over 7f with Grade 1-winning stable companion Here To Win (Muzi Yeni). He sweated up on his neck and was keen to get on with it but Delpech did not allow him to geton terms until going into the final turn. He finished much the better and clocked 1min 12.09sec for the last 6f.

Bold Silvano came from quite some way back when beaten a neck by stable companion Irish Flame in the Daily News and will be a pound better off with the Durban July favourite on the big day. Furthermore, he has a good draw, only one off the rail.

Delpech, bidding for his third win in South Africa's greatest race, is sweet on his chances and said: "I had to ride him from the back in his last two starts because of a wide draw. This time that won't be necessary.

"The faster they go the better. But if they go slow it won't matter as he has a turn of speed. He is a tough horse and has had a fantastic prep. I couldn't have asked for better."

It is a condition of entry that all the Durban July runners gallop on the course nine days before the race and one of those who worked best was the Mike Bass-trained Pocket Power, who dead-heated with Dancer's Daughter two years ago.

Bernard Fayd'herbe's mount was never off the bridle when going 7f with better-fancied stable companion Fort Vogue (Anton Marcus).

Fort Vogue was unimpressive and had to be pushed along in the straight, yet at 5-1 is a third of Pocket Power's price.

One who went particularly well was the Justin Snaith-trained Russian Sage (Richard Fourie). The 2008 Cape Derby and Daily News winner has been backed into 20-1 (from 50) in recent weeks.

I guess a blind man could have guessed this one B)-

How about the Shaman with smoke in his eyes?

Although I got embarrassed for Gold Circle watching the bones being thrown, clearly nobody tipped the bloke the fancied runners. He tips a quartet without anything from the top 5 in the top 4, about a 50,000/1 quartet?

Orbison
Fabiani
Vertical Takeoff
Flying Tristram

Yeah Dave. It kills me that an employee in media for racing doesn't know who the runners in their prime product are, while their customers can not only recite the runners, they could add the trainer, jock, colours and draw and odds.

Surely the handicapper has given Russian Sage a real chance in the July. If Snaith has indeed managed to bring him back to his best then surely he is very well in running off 104 MR. Whether he stays is another matter but with Fourie in the irons and a decent (ish) draw I think +20-1 represents great value...

Just wondered, how often does a horse win the July at second or third attempt or more(PP the only notable exception)
Most often, in my opinion, a newcommer seems to win

The history buffs among us will tell you for sure, but I seem to recall Beau Art winning at his 4th attempt?

Russian Sage did put up a good gallop, and if anything to go by, Sparkling Gem was equally impressive, and could be good value in the Garden Province
