The Voice of the South African Punter
The Mission
African Betting Clan is established for the upliftment of the sports punter, who enjoys a bet on horseracing, football and other sports, enabling them to voice their views and opinions on all aspects of the sport of their choice, free of charge.
Everyone who joins the Clan can discuss a multitude of sports events with a view to increasing the knowledge-base of all interested parties. Horse Racing is by far the most represented sport and we welcome the views of the many owners, trainers, punters and all racing stakeholders, all of whom post their contributions on our discussion forums. Members glean what they want to and discuss selections for the day and the general well being of the sport. Objectives are to provide an insight into racing that was in the main kept behind a large brick wall and to find those winners. The punter now has preferred choices to make and if the sport is to emerge strongly in the face of fierce competition and the corporatisation of its dominant racing operator, we have come to appreciate that all stakeholders need to appreciate each other's role. African Betting Clan is the catalyst for this to happen.
In keeping with the ethos of our site, we thank Clansman Wally for his contribution to the mission statement via his post on the African Betting Clan forum.
2006 — The Founding
It started with a racing forum
In 2006, a small group of South African racing fans were tired of hunting for tips and form reads across scattered websites. There was no single place where the tote talk, the Saturday picks and the good-natured bickering over a beaten favourite could live together.
So African Betting Clan was born — a Joomla forum, a handful of true believers, and one simple idea: South Africa deserved a home for its racing community. Dial-up modems, capped internet and all, the first members showed up, said hello, and never left.
The Journey
Twenty years of threads
🎩
Durban July
The biggest Saturday of the year. The July thread was the festival — tips, trashing talk and the annual scramble to pick the winner of the race that stops the nation.
🏇
Cape Met
Summer racing's glamour day, debated from the first declaration to the final stride — and argued about all over again the following Monday.
🥂
Derby Day
Champagne and chalk — the traditions that turned race day into a community occasion, whether you were at the course or following from the couch.
The characters arrived early: the form experts who could recite a horse's last six runs from memory, the lurkers who finally posted after years of reading, the usernames that became legend. The milestones piled up too — 868,000+ posts and 5,900+ members — and with them, the occasional glorious winner and plenty of stories about the one that got away.
The Rebuild — 2026
Same home, new platform
In 2026, we rebuilt African Betting Clan from the ground up. Every post from the Joomla years was carried over — the history stayed intact while the engine underneath changed completely.
Faster. Mobile-friendly. Built with the community first and built for the next 20 years. The names are the same, the banter is the same, and the welcome mat is still out. It's the same home — just with better broadband.
Somewhere in 2006 I decided South African racing fans deserved a place of their own — somewhere to share a tip, argue a form read and cheer each other home. What I never expected was that it would become a family. Thank you to every member who ever posted, welcomed a new face, or kept the conversation going long after the last race was run. This community belongs to all of you.
