Zilpaterol alert !!! was created by Dave Scott
GENERAL NOTICE

TO ALL BREEDERS AND OWNERS

CAUTIONARY NOTICE: ZILPATEROL

The NHA laboratory has observed, in some racehorse specimens emanating countrywide, traces of a substance which may be indicative of Zilpaterol.

Zilpaterol is a chemical substance which is commercially used in South Africa in feed for cattle destined for meat production. It is reported that this substance is harmful to horses and can result in adverse side effects. As such the NHA is monitoring the situation with reference to the NHA Rules.

Breeders and owners are urged to take precautionary steps to monitor the feed which is sourced for their horses and that it is obtained/ produced under conditions which would not result in Zilpaterol being present. It is for this reason that commercial chemical fertilizers are preferable in the growing of feed crops destined for horses.

.....more possible feed contamination... .....this Zilmax is nasty sh!t and extremely detrimental to even the cattle (and now sheep) they feed it to have to be ready to die....because prolonged feeding before slaughter causes major hoof degeneration....there is no way that this is fed or administered to horses purposely as it breaks down fat but can affect muscle adversely and is said to act as pre-slaughter " meat tenderizer" and to bulk(beef) up slaughter animals....it has been banned for use by major meat processing companies in USA even though it is FDA approved.....however it is very widely used here in RSA because the manufacturer MSD.... has convinced beef farmers that it is big money to have beefed up hefers.....

....it would seem that the NHRA are on a wild goose chase looking for this sh!t in contaminated feed ....as this Zilmax has been available in an injectable form for some time now....and it is being traced to a few yards one of which has really grown recently despite previous positives for other banned sh!T ....

The drug Zilpaterol made headlines in the racing industry on a few occasions in 2013, and none of them were for good reasons.

The drug, which has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration for use in cattle heading to slaughter, increases muscle and body fat in livestock. Banned for use in horses, Zilpaterol has been found on the backside of a few racetracks, resulting in positive tests occurring in New Mexico, Hong Kong, and California. While the cases in California and Hong Kong were proven to be as a result of contaminated feed, there are at least four cases currently pending in New Mexico.

In a recent article published by Sure Bet Racing News, Pete Herrera investigates the rash of positive tests, and what happens to a horse when it injests the drug.

“It increases the heart rate and increases the blood pressure. It increases the adrenalin,” says Dr. Jerry Cosper, a veterinarian and member of the New Mexico Racing Commission. “It's no different than putting Speed in a horse.”

....poor pony pin cushions....their feet will fail....and sudden spasmic tie ups while running are going to wreck muscles and tendons....why why why .....

.....in tests on horses to determine if this sh!t was at all feasible it was found that.....

Three healthy horses were fed the beta-adrenergic agonist feed additive zilpaterol at a dosage of 0.17 mg/kg body weight to study zilpaterol elimination kinetics. Soon after ingestion of zilpaterol, the horses developed skeletal muscle tremors and tachycardia. A 75 to 87.5% reduced dose of zilpaterol was fed to the horses 24 hours after the initial dose; administration was discontinued thereafter. The horses exhibited restlessness, muscle tremors, and profuse sweating 20 to 25 minutes after ingestion of zilpaterol. Tachycardia developed within 40 minutes and took up to 2 weeks to resolve. Muscle tremors lasted up to 1 week. The most pronounced derangements in serum biochemistry were increased activities of lactic dehydrogenase, creatine kinase, and aspartate transferase, indicating muscle damage. The most severely affected horse also had transient azotemia, hematuria, and proteinuria, suggesting renal damage. All three horses recovered without treatment and were clinically normal 2 to 3 weeks after the initial dose of zilpaterol. Because of their anabolic properties, beta-adrenergic feed additives are considered a risk for abuse in performance horses, despite the absence of Food and Drug Administration approval for such use. Oral administration of zilpaterol to horses at the dosage indicated for use in cattle may result in prolonged adverse effects, including tachycardia, muscle tremors, and renal damage.

.....now imagine how fast the inject-able solution will act....in bold above is the scientific description of what is known as the Krebbs cycle.....more commonly known as muscle "tie up"....more thorough investigation needs to be made especially when horses with sound legs suddenly go wrong in a race...:S
