Crawford filly euthanised after stable fiasco ..

From www.turftalk.co.za/crawford-filly-euthan...after-stable-fiasco/

A filly from Harold Crawford’s stable had to be euthanised after she was mysteriously let out of her stable alongside nine others, ran freely inside the Milnerton training centre and was injured in the early hours of Monday morning.

Crawford’s assistant trainer Michelle Rix, still in a state of shock mid-morning Monday, said that ten horses, stabled inside the complex but outside of the main barn, had their stable doors opened and were let loose during the course of Sunday night or Monday morning.

“We have no idea who would have done this. I just can’t believe it. When our head groom arrived at 5.30am, the ten outside stables were empty and our horses were running around al over the centre, with no security in sight. One filly, Twice As Shy, injured her knee badly, we X-rayed the knee and it was so bad we had to put her down.”

Dean Diedericks, Phumelela’s National Tracks Manager, said that he was investigating what had happened and he commented at 10am: “I have just arrived and unfortunately I have no official explanation for what happened here. I will be speaking shortly to the security officers and their supervisor to gain more information.
“What we do know is that 10 horses were let out, several of them obtained injuries in running around and one was seriously injured. We are not sure whether they were let out on Sunday night or early this morning, it could be that they were let out just before the head groom came in at 5.30, but as said I have no official answers.”

Diedericks added: “Normally this kind of issue is related to a dispute between grooms and their employers but again, nothing of the kind has been established, the matter is under investigation and I will report back.”

.....FFS when are they going to beef up that slack security....does someone have to be martyred though a criminal act before they take any action.....build that palisade fence and secure the access/s with a reputable security company.....these reports of security breaches are going to further impact that dying Cape racing.....

Very sad situation, its hard to believe that you can access yards and have direct contact with very expensive horse flesh?
Hope the full story is established sooner than later and strength to all connections with your loss

Shocking but could happen at any establishment. It would take a groom a minute to walk into any yard at Summerveld
and open 10 boxes and walk off. Almost certainly be a disgruntled worker.

Surely that is why you have security is to report an incident to the rightful authority straight away??

Correct Craig. Ongoing problems at Milnerton, with Security, it seems.

The info is that the horses were loose most of the night. Where was Security ?

Are there enough guards on duty per shift ? It is a very long or widespread area....

Surely there is a budget allocated for security?
Is security done on a contact basis?

Perhaps a new broom is needed to sweep clean...

If you are renting stables then in the lease agreement there should be a clause as regards security.

Anyone able to post that clause as regards Milnerton facilities, in fact any facilities run by said owner?

....going back in the archives of the Sporting Post.....I found an article on the indecent where Harold Crawford was robbed in November 2013....in the article the security problems were highlighted including a repeated occurrences of stable doors been opened at night....so six years down the line no remedies yet Patrick Davies was on hand then and gave his 2 cents worth....and deja vu he is back and still giving that same 2 cents worth.....please spend a bit more this time and a lot more than 2 cents to prevent it...:S
