The catalogue for the 2019 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale is now online and can be viewed at www.bsa.co.za .

The sale – at the TBA complex from 24 to 26 April offers buyers the chance to buy some of South Africa’s best-bred yearlings, from the best breeders. A total of 565 blue blooded yearlings have been handpicked for this auction.

As in 2018, the NYS has been separated into a first and second session.

Held at the Germiston complex for a first time in 1977, the National Sale’s honour roll includes some of the finest thoroughbreds ever produced in South Africa. Past graduates include Horse Of The Year and subsequent outstanding stallion Dynasty, and fellow Horse Of The Year winning champions Futura, Legislate and Legal Eagle – as well as Equus Champion Do It Again, whose wins include the 2018 G1 Vodacom Durban July and 2019 G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.

The top sires of recent times will all be represented, with the likes of Captain Al, Dynasty, Gimmethegreenlight, Querari, Silvano, Trippi and Var in evidence.

Exciting stallions with yearlings on offer for a first time include Dynasty’s Cape Guineas winner Act Of War, Tapit’s brilliant son Coup De Grace, Galileo’s blue blooded son Flying The Flag, Dynasty’s Horse Of The Year sons Futura and Legislate, Dubawi’s SA Nursery winner Willow Magic, and Galileo’s multiple graded stakes winner Global View. The latter has already proved a crowd pleaser, with Global View’s first yearlings having already made up to R1.3 million.

The sale will also have an international flavour, with stock by such stallions as unbeaten legend Frankel, multiple Classic winner and hot young sire Camelot, champion Rock Of Gibraltar, sire of more than 100 stakes winners, and multiple Australian Group 1 winner Press Statement.

There are at least 20 Grade 1 winning mares with progeny on the National Sale, which also offers buyers the chance to buy half or full siblings to the following G1 winners: Arabian Beat (SA Nursery), Antonoe (Just A Game Stakes), Athina (SA Fillies Classic), Attenborough (Computaform Sprint), Bela-Bela (Equus Champion), Big City Life (Equus Champion), Coral Fever (Champions Challenge), Edict Of Nantes (Equus Champion), French Navy (Equus Champion), Gulf Storm (Cape Flying Championship), Heavy Metal (Equus Champion), King Of Pain (Gold Challenge), Lady In Black (Equus Champion), Legislate (Horse Of The Year, sire), Liege (Summer Cup), Link Man (Gold Medallion), Nightingale (Majorca Stakes), Rabiya (Cape Guineas), Snowdance (Cape Fillies Guineas, Majorca Stakes), Val De Ra (Equus Champion), Viva Maria (Woolavington 2000), Wagner (Summer Cup) and Wavin’ Flag (Gold Cup). – BSA

......also like the ped of 242.....and although Global View appears to have a nice ped he is only a 3 time winner at Gr2 and Gr3 level 1600 & 1700m ....and is standing in an area devoid of the mares that will really click with that nice ped pic.... .

Prices are not good at all but maybe very realistic as too many average mares are being breed for a saturated market .

.....yet from some very average mares there have been Champions..... so who is to qualify that something in this lot is not the next Vin Fizz.....who started with a few that could only snag a win in PE......and now her progeny are highly sought after.....before that a 2 time winner French Muse who threw some goodies too(have many more examples but these spring to mind)......a mare does not necessary have to have black type to get better progeny.....she just has to have a certain genetic predisposition to propagate greatness......find that in even in some horses that could not get to the track.....

Averaged out Bob the horses cost lets say R50 000 each, all in. The new owner will then pay 6 months farm/pre-training at R40 000 and then 6-9 months training before the horse runs plus Vet costs for a year. So the new owner is in for R160 000 before the first run on a horse that cost peanuts.

It is fair to say that obviously the breeders are out of pocket and certainly the horses that sold for R15 000 are an exercise in loss making.

The said horse, if you are lucky wins a race in its fourth start, by now you are in for R200 000 and the winners stake check of R52 000 after the jockey & trainer have taken 10% each is far cry from breaking even. That being said if you approach this as a purely a fun exercise then the numbers don't matter as you know that you are going spend 200k over 18 months to have fun.

Back in the day I followed the progeny of the broodmare Star Dums. She produced Grade 1 winners, Planetary Music and Drum Star. To this day she can be found in the progeny of, Twist of Fate. Heavy Metal and Skin Tight also can be traced through Star Drums. Skin Tight was out of Tight Drums who was a hard knocking multiple winning PE mare who initially raced for Ferraris . Skin Tight produced, For The Lads (Won at any price on July Day). Star Drums was broodmare of the year though.

Unfortunately these numbers are all too realistic - and certainly the small guys (of which I am one) certainly have to ask themselves if the 'fun' is worth 200k - and of course if you fork out a bit more for perceived 'quality', you can easily find yourself another 100k or so out of pocket

the lower prices are just a ' realigning' of the Industry after the thieves ruined it with stolen money,And there were a few of them if we remember Van Vuuren, Jooste, Moodley etc must be a few others?

The breeders often refer to "cheapies" or "not real money" as R150 - R200 000

This can be seen as true when you crack a good one and maybe are lucky enough to sell it locally or to Mauritius, Hong Kong or Dubai, but let me assure you, it is more likely that lightning strikes you.

Besides, all of the marketing only refers to the success stories and not the thousands of yearlings bought that could never return 20% of the outlay. A suggestion is that every horse sold on auction should have their racing progress updated on the sales sites. Buyers know the odds but at least people will be able to track the sales with the best records.

.......yet it was this buying with monopoly money that drove out the middle market killing off the smaller owners and now breeders and ultimately the smaller trainers......racing is not as fun devoid of the dreamers boutique breeders and the real passionate few that enhanced the game......it is sickening that it is now a struggle for pure commercialism......not to mention the industry fractures left in the wake of Jooste's appointed firmly lodged at the coalface further discouraging broader growth and bringing in new interest....the industry has been severely nobbled and will take a very long time to recover.....:(

Racing got carried away with greed during the Jooste/van Vuuren era where stolen money was blowing up a totally false market and driving out the smaller and middle man. Tote pools are down and fields can barely hold up at the moment. The smaller man has upped and left as racing forgot about them during the glory days or should we say days of theft!

I ran a medium yard with 50-70 horses build purely by small owners but could not compete against the above and decided to call it a day. Gone were the days you could by a Legally Blonde for R30k or a Strategic News for AUS$40k. Now it’s all big money and racing is struggling however there is still a huge base of small to medium guys bruised and scarred on the sidelines but willing to come back BUT and a huge BUT, racing and it’s administration are doing NOTHING to get them back. I talk to a lot of them often and also talk to a lot of guys never been involved before who are so interested as they know it’s my long past however there isn’t a accessible way of getting them into the game...

I’ll give you another funny example. I came into the game by being exposed to it from a young age. My first memory was being left in the car park at Scottsville by my parents while they went racing (kids weren’t allowed in, in those days). My brother and I watched racing, heard the horses come past at the 400m mark, the jockeys interacted with us when they walked past to the start etc WE WERE ADDICTED! That memory is still fondly locked away in my mind heart and soul.....HOWEVER.....and here is racing today.... this past Sunday I took my son to run around a bit at the 300m in the car park across from Greyville, Golf Course side infield as we had just come off the beach and I wanted to show him the horses and let him play on the grass a bit. Needless to say, security first said he can’t ride his bike there which was at least 50m away from the track and then the next guard came and said, you can’t actually sit here. You need to leave or go in. Well well, another possible future racing person gone.

It’s the current attitude from racing admin that needs change. Forget parties and rock stars... bring in the purests and they in turn will bring more people! Some of the purest racing people I know don’t have the millions of other peoples pensions to spend but stay in the game and bring people in purely from their passion.

Racing, sales companies, etc need to go back to the smaller guys and say let’s work a plan forward.. as I say, I’ve got a good few people wanting to get in and know more but there is just nothing for them to even begin to start the process.
