Precisely the reason why I didn't go antepost on him. Wonder where does he go now...Queens Plate? Derby? Maybe the politician stakes?

Has he been injured or did MDK just decide to skip this particular race?

Maybe MDK is unsure if he is good enough?

..... or maybe he wants to keep the weight down. What is the maximum weight a three year old colt may carry in the Sunmet, and isn't the weight determined by the number of Grade 1 races won - something along those lines?

Guessing has never been widely acclaimed as a good gambling strategy

I believe Hawwaam is a potential super star in the making but I think the point is being missed.
JHB & KZN horses are expected to perform in 3 provinces to be crowned a champion whereas the CPT horses have to perform at home and maybe in KZN to be crowned champions.

How many CPT horses have gone to contest the Dingaans or JHB Guineas and then travelled back for the CPT Guineas?

The constant review of Graded races in SA is a good thing but it does not help when the programming is not reviewed. Which is the better Grade 1 based on contenders? Cape derby or Daily News?
Because of tradition people will say the Derby but facts show that the best cross section of SA 3yr olds compete in the Daily News.

Why should Mike travel Hawwaam? Let the Cape bombs travel to JHB and take him on in The Classic.

In short the total programme needs to be re-looked with proper planning we should have a 2 & 3 yr old series that trainers can prepare for and then a Sprinters, Classic & Stayers series for the rest with ample opportunities to prepare and target.

they could try a real Tripple crown - 1600m cape town mid feb , 1800m Kzn and then derby Turffontein - all GR1 and all 2 million rands each- a horse than won that would be a proper champion

Exactly the type of thinking we need Mr H.....

The politics need to be removed and a holistic view adopted to get the interest back into racing for 365 days. CPT will want to hold onto everything in Summer because their international owners are in CPT during this period. The question is, does this help for the rest of the year when they race the majority of their horses in KZN & PE and cant fill CPT fields?
Gauteng will not be happy because they are the backbone of SA racing on a weekly basis, racing for the whole year....

Remove the politics, plan properly and people will return to the race course to watch champions compete. The Operators can offer travel incentives to owners and create prize pools that go down to tenth place as well as punting opportunities for the series.

In the States because the race courses are privately owned, the owners of the courses incentivise, attract and contract the best to come and race at their courses. Unfortunately in SA there is an attitude of, "we are putting the race on.....the best should enter"

Right now we have three major racing jurisdictions working against each other in terms of programming which ultimately robs the public and people lose interest.

Imagine an ante-post field of 50 runners now for the Daily News with betting and major prize money and accolades? Trainers have an opportunity to plan and with clear rewards can choose which races to aim their 3yr olds at.

Make the July a leg of the Triple Crown even if the July is contested by other horses.

That would defeat the purpose of racing 3yr olds against each other ...if you want a triple crown type setup then met ...July and summer cup... win all three and bonus 5 million....

The other thing that sticks out in this small field is that the current Champion Trainer
with at least 40 well bred 3yo in the stable does not have a runner in the
biggest Classic
That in his home town

Maybe the Sire population needs a rethink... IMO all our champion sires are geared on the International classic distances?

....it seems that it is AHS issues with travelling again.....who has taken over this monitoring and are reports of recent outbreaks correct....this AHS will never be addressed correctly as it is not taken seriously and every stake holder is going off in a different direction....no wonder MDK is frustrated and Barry Irwin packed up shop here...
