Vaal Preview Tuesday 20th September

The Vaal stages eight races on the outside track on Tuesday, they will also be testing the wide track ahead of the Grand Heritage.

Race 1:

PREVIEW: BIBLICAL SUSAN, by Bernadini out of a Gr 2 winner in the USA over 1800m, found support on debut over 1000m at Scottsville in a fair maiden and flew up for second from a tricky draw. She is the one to beat over a step up in trip she will relish. MY FRIEND LEE showed pace over 1200m last time and stayed on for second so should also enjoy the step up in trip, although the form of that race hasn’t worked out too well to date. There are a number of first-timers in the field and none of them stand out on pedigree so the betting should be monitored. (David Thiselton 6-7-10)

Race 2:

PREVIEW: ROQUEBRUNE is a classy sort with plenty of pace who finished close to his good stablemate Riverine last time and he looks likely to rise above his current merit rating so, despite officially being 4,5kg under sufferance with The Stone Thrower, it would not be a major surprise to him win. THE STONE THROWER is best in at the weights and will go close but might prefer a touch further. PENULTIMATE could be anything having beaten a moderate field easily on debut but he is officially 7,5kg under sufferance with The Stone Thrower so it will be tough. AGGRESSIVE also won well on debut but is also 7,5kg under sufferance. LE CLOS is 5kg under sufferance and seems best on the Turffontein Inside track. COUNT TASSILO needs further. The first-timer JUANA is by Overlord and is not particularly well related. (David Thiselton 2-1-6)

Race 3:

PREVIEW: SKYNIGHT ran well over 1450m last time and looks likely to relish this step up on trip on a straight course. RAMAAS has been fancied in his last two starts over 1450m and 1950m respectively and was thereabouts both times. He pulled last time so should love the step down in trip, although he did also pull in the 1450m event. AIR FORCE LEGEND is ideally suited to this trip. He returns from a short layoff wit Lerena up. TOGETHER FOREVER was ahead of Man The Fort and Red Renegade when they last met over this trip. RED RENEGADE also returns from a short layoff. He has not shown much and was beaten by the battling Man The Fort when they last met over this trip. MAN THE FORT could earn if bouncing back to form. CRISIS CONTROL is by promising sire Bold Silvano out of a National Assembly mare who has produced four poor horses and one four-time winner, albeit in PE. (David Thiselton 4-5-2)

Race 4:

PREVIEW: LILY LOVE drops back to what looks to be her ideal trip and this hard-knocking sort doesn’t have a lot to beat. If she starts on terms she should go close. SECRET VISION finished strongly when second over 1200m last time, beating Lily Love by two lengths, and she should go close. However, she will find it harder to catch Lily Love over this trip, especially if the latter does not dwell at the start as she did in that last start. LADY OF THE WORLD wasn’t disgraced in a stronger race than this last time and before that went close, both over this trip. She is drawn on the standside rail and also has a winning chance. BURGUNDY ROSE comes out marginally on top of Lady Of The World on a strict formline through Captain’s Girl so can’t be ignored, although she is exposed. AT A GLANCE beat Lily Love by a length over 1200m last time when making her debut and has scope for improvement. FADEAWAY by Visionaire is a half-sister to Gr 1 Mercury Sprint winner Disappear. SILVER JAY is by Jay Peg out of a National Emblem mare who has produced three winners. (David Thiselton 1-4-3)

Race 5:

PREVIEW: RONIN WARRIOR will go close here over a suitable trip if starting better than he did last time on the Turffontein Inside track. He is a horse who likes to lead before using his effective kick to see off the challengers so he should also be more suited to this straight track. CHIEF SIOUX enjoys the course and distance and is 8kg better off with Tiger’s Legacy for a 1,1 length beating over this trip. TIGER’S LEGACY ran a cracker over 1000m last time and Strydom retains the ride. However, he was raised four points for the effort meaning he is only 0,5kg better off for a 4,25 length beating by Ronin Warrior over this trip in his penultimate start. On the other hand he was found to be coughing in the latter race. MIGHTY MANZI has his third run after a layoff  and is off an attractive merit rating so he will likely be finishing strongly over a trip on the sharp side. INSPECTOR CASEY has dropped to an attractive merit rating and could earn.  (David Thiselton 2-6-7)

Race 6:

PREVIEW: ANGELS POWER ran a cracker in the GR 3 Spring Spree Stakes, a handicap over 1200m around the turn on the Turffontein Inside track, when receiving 7,5kg from the top class Kangaroo Jack and making up a lot of ground to go down by 1,75 lengths after being dropped out from a high draw. Kangaroo Jack was running off what looked to be a capped merit rating, although he did win effortlessly. Angel’s Power was given only a one point merit rated raise and his high draw could well be favourable in this race. DENNIS THE MENACE is evergreen and from a high draw could produce his usual strong finish.  CALL KELLY has been knocking on the door from 1000-1200m and his nine draw could well be a plum one. DREAMUPONADREAM pulled over 1450m last time so will appreciate the step down in trip. He has ability but also obviously has problems having only had three starts since his runner up finish in the Empeor’s Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m almost two years ago. VULCAN has snuck into the handicap with the minimum weight. As one with plenty of ability who has dropped from a 99 merit rating down to a 75, he has been competitive in his last two starts. He should be competitive here too, although it remains to be seen whether his number one draw will be disadvantageous. (David Thiselton 2-1-6)

Race 7:

PREVIEW: SAIL FOR JOY ran a cracker in a Novice Plate last time out despite having a tough draw and a repeat could see him go cose despite being a young three-year-old running in his first handicap off an 81 merit rating. GOLD STATUS is 4kg better off with Silver Kavalier for a 0,3 length beating and has a chance here, although his middle draw might be tricky. WILLIAM NICOL has come into his own and enjoys this trip and his high draw looks likely to be favourable. SILVER KAVALIER has improved with blinkers in his new yard and although raised a maximum eight points for his last win he can take advantage of another probably advantageous draw. COSMIC COUNT won his maiden well and the form has been franked but it’s never easy for a young three-year-olds merit rated above 80 to face older horses in handicaps first time out the maidens and his low draw might not be favourable. (David Thiselton 7-4-1)

Race 8:

PREVIEW: RED POMEGRANATE’s maiden win over this trip has worked out quite well so she could follow up off this 78 merit rating. CHINA BEACH is a resolute galloper who has dropped to a competitive merit rating over a trip that she’s effective over. MIGHT AS WELL was consistent before finally cracking her first win and Strydom has done well on her over this trip before. (David Thiselton 4-1-6)
