There was only about 50 on track when the race of the season took place last season (Greenpoint)

Sure we can soldier on?

It will only be the weekend when the owners like to be on track etc that their could be issues

Would have to say I have had head in the sand, no comparison with I am near the beach.
I actually thought it was total exaggeration and can’t believe the magnitude that we appear to be in??

It’s probably time to sober up 🙈😷🐎🥃

UK is specified as a high risk country. Have a buddy and his Mrs arriving from the UK Tuesday. I think I will be saving a trip to the airport.

Austria bans gatherings of more than five people, and orders schools and shops to shut. Five!

SA can do it!

This could be pretty terminal for local racing :

1. Betting - As ironic as this may sound South Africa's generally poor racecourse attendance suggests that the absence of on-course punters should not be a significant setback.

However - it may have a massive impact on those punters who do not have access to 'betting technology' ie smart phones, pcs, laptops etc., if the 'gathering of 100 or more' rule is enforced.

Of course South Africa is a world leader in instituting rules which are never enforced - so it may just be 'business as usual' for off course facilities.

The real revenue hit is likely to come from the absence of sports betting. Most popular sports have been suspended with immediate effect. The operator relies on revenue from these activities to no little degree to subsidise horse racing. By my estimate/guess this could result in a revenue loss of about 30% which is normally allocated towards stakes.

2. National Yearling Sale - Will this ( can this? ) take place. We could have telephone bidding linked to the internet. But this is not that easy as they would need to eliminate the delay in the stream. It may, however, deliver the most honest sale in history as the 'game playing' - which is so obvious to all but the blind and the sales company - might not be so easy to stage manage against invisible bidders.

3. Grooms - This is a huge problem as they are particularly vulnerable through their poor socio-economic conditions.

4. Defaulting - It is likely that there will be a huge rise in defaulting for a number of reasons : Firstly - the fringe players who are already tardy are likely to justify continued non payment on the basis that there is no/reduced racing. Secondly - A number of owners are likely to come under severe pressure from the impact on their own businesses and incomes. Thirdly - It is inevitable that there will be some fatalities amongst the current owner group.

5. Big meetings - It would be a surprise if some of the big meetings were able to go ahead. The balance of the Gauteng season looks at risk whilst Durban could also come under threat. The loss of these big money spinning meetings would be a body blow.

Our President made a sober and measured announcement last night. But don't expect any help from that area if the virus gets out of control. This is the group which brought you SAA, Eskom, PRASA and dozens of municipalities. They are not miraculously going to be able to manage this crisis.

On Sky news - The WHO “We have a simple message for all countries - test test test”
Why?
If test is negative – they do nothing (but the test does not say that you may have had it 14 days ago – they don’t test for antibodies)
If positive – they also do nothing - there is no specific treatment, only palliative treatment
Why do a test, even if the person has a fever and a cough
Is it just morbid curiosity?

Ignorance doesn't kill you, but it makes you sweat a lot.
