Right Royal Weekend 🐎👑
1 year 9 months ago - 1 year 9 months agoGood morning all from a rather nippy Pretoria.
I am glad the weather in England is superb to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee.
There is many parades, parties and festivities to say well done to Queen Elizabeth.
It's difficult to find the same enthusiasm if you were born North of the border but in fairness for all her wealth, she has had a tough time with the Royal family over the year's.
At times it's been like a soap opera and sad to hear she won't manage Epsom for the Derby.
There will be Royal Ascot in a couple of weeks where I am sure she will be able to attend and give more support to the sport.
I have also heard that many pubs are having specials where the prices have been reduced to the same as they were many years ago.🍺
You might find a couple of Scotsman holding back for happy hour 🥃
As far as racing we have the Oaks on Friday and the Derby on Saturday.
I have not changed my stance on the Oaks and I am still in the camp of Emily Upjohn.
The stable companion is Nashwa and it will be ridden by Hollie and she will make history if she can beat Frankie.
I can't talk about the Derby without mentioning Lester Piggott.
We have plenty of tributes on the site but I would just like to mention two on a personal note.
When I first met Mrs S I took her the dog racing and various pubs for the first couple of weeks. She hinted that maybe something more romantic might be in order.
So I booked tickets for the movies to watch " A horse called Nijinsky " during the show Lester spoke and Sue asked "why don't they have sub titles?"
The other story relates to Roberto in the 1972 Derby.
I was working in a factory and used to hold bets for big races (a bucket shop and bookies runner combination).
I had taken plenty of bets including on Rheingold and decided to put the "hold" on Roberto.
At the time I was aware that if Rheingold had won I would have had to sell my Lambretta scooter to meet my obligations.
I those days I was an MOD in 1972 ( unfortunately no relationship to the current saviour of racing).
I have included a link below which will give you an indication of the stress I endured that day.
In addition after they called Roberto the winner it was followed by a stewards enquiry.
Needless to say it was the longest half an hour in my life and I have kept a photo of Lester next to the bed side table since.
I have had a punt on Desert Crown this year and actually worried about Nations Pride being supplemented for the race but its far less stressful than 50 years ago.
Remember the big sprint meeting from Hollywood Scottsville on Saturday always guarantees big payouts but some decent runners.
Good Punting.

thanks for the clip Dave,
my ONLY association with LESTER PIGGOTT is a picture of HIM & ME @ Madame Tussauds in LONDON..... but i fear his stature may have been removed after he " did some time " in the U.K. for Tax Evasion.
My hero as well Dave.

Wonderful watching A P O'brien saddle all his runners... Grooms and assistants watching him instead of him watching them work... So refreshing

In he early-mid 1960's I was working for Sir Robert McA;pines in their HO in Park Lane,Mayfair ,London.
The McAlpine family were big in Racing at that time.
As I was the Junior Clerk at the time ,I used to do all the running around and was asked by Malcolm McAlpine''s secretary whether I knew Lester Piggott.
No problem and would I go to the Dorchester Hotel at about 10.00am and give him an envelope.
The Dorchester was only about 200 yards up the road.
I met him in the lounge and after handing over the envelope, naively asked him for a receipt.
He stood up,tapped his hand on my shoulder and gave me a huge smile and walked out.
I met him quite a few times after that and he always gave me a huge smile everytime he saw me.
